This is article no. 2 from 10 in the series 10 signs you should invest in your cyber security.
2. One single password for everything
In the last year many services were hacked and email addresses and password hashes (sometimes passwords in plain text) were stolen. This allows hackers to reverse engineer your password and use it to access all other services you use.
For this reason it is important to have unique passwords for each online service. If one gets hacked, you would not lose the others.
Wondering how come somebody knows you have certain accounts?
Simply by probing them: checking if the obtained combination email address – password works on as many websites as possible …
After all, all people you know have a Facebook account, LinkedIn and so on… This is why it is better to enable two-factor authentication for online services that support this. And these days, almost all social media sites support it.
We wrote a lot about how to create good passwords and how to remember them as well as how to enable two-factor authentication. Please check this blog to learn more about it.
Please don’t use simple passwords, even if the website accepts it. Think about combinations which make sense to you but not to others.
